Fincantieri NexTech is Onboard the advanced Italian Navy “Trieste” LHD

On December 7, 2024, the Italian Navy has officially received its newest multipurpose amphibious unit, the Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) “Trieste”. This advanced naval vessel marks a significant milestone in the modernization of Italy’s maritime capabilities.
Fincantieri NexTech is on board the new naval unit, designed to ensure extremely efficient land-air-marine connections with SEASNavy™, a state-of-the-art naval ship automation technology. This reliable system grants continuous control, onboard safety, operability, and equipment efficiency.
The high level of automation and integration offered by our Ship Management System (SMS) addresses the modern operational demands for flexibility and reduced manning from navies worldwide. The comprehensive supply package includes monitoring and control systems for propulsion and machinery equipment, electrical and power generation systems, ship auxiliaries, ship services, and safety systems. The Ship Management System is also integrated with the Closed-Circuit Television system for safety functions, while a dedicated CCTV system is installed for the flight deck monitoring. Designed with cybersecurity at its core, Fincantieri
NexTech’s SMS guarantees the highest levels of redundancy, availability, survivability, and operability, even under damage or emergency conditions.
Based on a distributed PLC-based process control architecture in a client/server configuration, our SMS utilizes advanced virtualization techniques. It is capable of managing over 40,000 I/O signals, making it one of the most complex and extensive automation and management systems for naval platforms in the military sector. The supervision and operator interface level features Fincantieri NexTech’s proprietary advanced SCADA system, “Marine Portal Evolution”, developed in collaboration with the Italian Navy and already in use in other recent naval programs.
The Italian Navy “Trieste” LHD is capable of carrying a fully equipped battalion of landing troops. It features a through deck for aircraft operations and a full-length garage deck, with an aft section convertible into a dock with its own Landing Craft Mechanized (LCMs). Beyond its military capabilities, the vessel is designed to excel in disaster relief, humanitarian assistance, and search and rescue (SAR) operations during peacetime.
The introduction of the “Trieste” is a key component of the Italian Navy’s fleet renewal plan, which was approved by the Government and Parliament and initiated in May 2015 under the “Naval Act.” This renewal is conducted under the aegis of OCCAR (Organisation Conjointe de Cooperation sur l’Armement), the international organization for cooperation on armaments.
The “Trieste” represents a significant leap forward in naval technology and operational capability for the Italian Navy, ensuring readiness and versatility for a wide range of missions in the years to come.
